This workshop offers hands-on and user-friendly composition and improvisation techniques for both classroom and private music teachers. Composition techniques include invented notation, building a compositional toolbox, and creating strong melodies. Improvisation techniques include sound exploration, soundscapes, rhythm pieces, call and response, and conducted improvisation (conduction). Bring your instruments!

Matt Turner, cellist and pianist, teaches improvisation at Lawrence University. Improvising in myriad of styles, Turner appears on over 100 recordings and has performed in Canada, Europe, and Asia. His music is published by Carl Fischer, Alfred, Latham, and Alliance. He currently performs with Bill Carrothers, Randy Sabien, Janet Planet, and Hal Rammel. Turner is a Yamaha and D’Addario Performing Artist.
