WAUNAKEE, Wis. (June 9, 2006) – Some of the finest young musicians in the state are about to meet up for what could be the most rewarding musical experience of their lifetime – the Wisconsin School Music Association’s (WSMA) 2006 High School State Honors Music Project!

The WSMA State Honors Music Project brings Wisconsin’s best young musicians together to work with nationally known conductors in a highly disciplined, professional setting.  When gifted students are challenged beyond what is possible in a classroom, the results are inspiring and even magical. Honors students learn that hard work, commitment, responsibility and working together for the good of the ensemble are the keys to success in music and in life,” said Linda Petersen, WSMA director of programs.

More than 1,940 students in grades 9, 10 and 11 auditioned for 420 positions in the WSMA High School State Honors Music Project ensembles. The auditions were held in seven sites across the state this past February.

The students selected to participate in the WSMA High School State Honors Music Project will meet for the first time at a summer camp at UW-Green Bay. The High School Band and Mixed Choir will meet from June 17 – 20, and the High School State Honors Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Choir will meet from June 21 – 24. All Honors students reconvene in Madison in late October to perform at the annual Wisconsin State Music Conference. The Honors concerts celebrate the remarkable achievements of Wisconsin’s finest young musicians and are open to the public.

The 2006 WSMA High School State Honors Project conductors are:

Orchestra Lowell Graham, Department of Music Chair, University of Texas – El Paso
Treble Choir

Edith A. Copely, Director of Choral Studies, Northern Arizona University

Jazz Ensemble Robert Washut, Professor of Music, University of Northern Iowa
