WSMA/DPI Student Composition Project

The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages the artistic abilities of Wisconsin students. Composition is included in the National Standards for Arts Education, and is a natural extension of the creativity mode of music specified in Wisconsin’s music curriculum guide.

Students submit original compositions and recordings to WSMA in early March. These works are evaluated by professional composers, and students receive written critique forms from the evaluators. Awards are awarded based solely on merit. Students may enter in either the High School or Middle School Division in one of the following categories:

  • Instrumental Solo
  • Instrumental Ensemble
  • Instrumental Jazz
  • Collaborative Solo
  • Vocal Solo
  • Vocal Ensemble
  • Vocal Jazz
