Hip-Hop is both a rich art form and a pedagogy, shown to enliven students, spark creativity, and sharpen critical thinking. This workshop will continue to explore elements of hip-hop music and culture, investigate best practices in hip-hop pedagogy, and explore how it can be a gateway toward developing your students’ self-knowledge, self-confidence and critical consciousness.
GOALS
- Provide a foundation in hip-hop education as a theoretical framework and culturally relevant approach
- Provide teachers with opportunities to participate in hip-hop culture (even if for the first time)
- Provide music teachers with real examples of workable outcomes, strategies, and lessons
- Provide an introduction to technology and techniques for composition, songwriting and beatmaking
- Leverage the CMP model for planning with hip-hop pedagogy

Instructors:
Prof. Jarritt Sheel is an assistant professor of music education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and a doctoral candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University in the music education department. He is a professional musician who has toured the world and led youth ensembles in places like Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. He’s particularly interested in how hip-hop music, culture and pedagogies should be applied in music education and teacher training. He is a co-founder of Hip Hop Music Ed.
Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings is the former Kellner Distinguished Chair of Urban Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, a Fellow of the Hagler Institute of Texas A&M University, and a member of the National Academy of Education (where she served as President from 2017-2021. Her area of expertise is culturally relevant pedagogy and equity focused instruction. She is author of the critically acclaimed book, “The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teacher of African American Children” as well as 2 other single authored books, 10 edited books, and more than 100 journal articles and book chapters. She is the recipient of 9 honorary degrees from US and international universities.
Toni Blackman is an artist, educator, and cultural ambassador. Toni Blackman’s mission is to be a music maker, teacher and healer who uses hip hop to inspire people to go beyond their limitations, to become more articulate, and translate words into action that further personal and professional development and help to create a better world. She is a visionary social innovator whose work has resonated in education, the arts and entertainment, and corporate arena. Toni’s Mindfulness Music and Hip Hop Meditation grew out of her contemplative practices, visualization exercises and a commitment to her own emotional well-being. A powerful presenter and performer, Toni has coached and mentored hundreds of artists, social entrepreneurs and creative professionals to greatness.
Lamont Holden is an independent music producer under the name TheLetterLBeats. Having honed his skills primarily on Reason Studios software, Lamont has been making and producing music, DJing, hosting podcasts, and serving as videographer, social media content creator, sound designer, teacher, and audio engineer for over 12 years. Lamont earned a B.A. in Rhetoric from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2004 and an M.A. in Teaching and Education from National Louis University in 2011. He works with University of Illnois School of Music students to facilitate pathways to the professional music industry by way of his “The Art of Beatmaking”, music business, and songwriting courses.
