Leila teaches in the Music Education Department at Lawrence University, has taught K-2 beginning Suzuki strings, 4-8 Orchestra, and has created and led two innovative music programs in elementary schools where every student drums, sings, dances, composes and improvises. As the Music Education Curator for the Mile of Music Festival in Appleton Wisconsin, Leila and her team lead 60 hands-on music-making events for the 90,000 annual visitors. She is the WMEA State Chair for Composition and Improvisation and was recently appointed to the Smithsonian Folkways Institute Committee on Music Education.
Loren Kiyoshi Dempster is a cellist, improvisor, composer, and educator. Based in Appleton, WI, he is a guest artist at Renaissance school for the Arts and a Lecturer of Music at Lawrence University. He has taught numerous courses based on creativity using improvisation, song creation, film scoring, dance, spoken word, electronic music, composition, and arranging. While residing in New York City for twelve years, he worked at the Music Conservatory of Westchester and the Waldorf School of Garden City. As music director and composer, he has worked with many choreographers including Gabriel Forestieri, Lower Left, Uh-Oh Trio, Chris Ferris, BK Soul, and Jonah Bokaer. Dempster also toured many years with Merce Cunningham Dance Company. He has taught Suzuki style cello lessons for over 20 years, regularly including improvisation and creativity in his studio. He has a Masters in Cello performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
