Participate in a musical activity highlighting innovative work in middle school music, be provided with a structure and templates for engaging all teachers, review a powerful example of action research in a middle school exploratory music classroom and participate in discussion of how paying deliberate attention to all content areas can enrich professional learning. Attendees will hear viewpoints of not only a music educator, but also a building principal.

Instructors: Mackenzie Bufis and Patty Sampson
Mackenzie Bufis taught instrumental music in Downers Grove District 58 from 2010-2015. Her teaching responsibilities included 4th-8th grade orchestra and band. She has also served as a curriculum development consultant for District 58. Mrs. Bufis co-wrote and presented “The Elephant in the Room: Preventing Sexual Misconduct in Education” at conferences across the country, including The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, IL and the Crimes Against Children Conference in Dallas, TX. She is the co-founder of The Elephant Alliance, an organization devoted to sexual abuse prevention. Mrs. Bufis earned her degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois in 2010.
Patty Sampson earned her undergraduate degree in music from DePaul University and Master’s degree in Music Education from Northwestern University. Miss Sampson taught at Jacobs HS, Mundelein HS, and is entering her 30th year of teaching and her 19th year at West Aurora HS. Miss Sampson conducts Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble, Freshman Bands, and Jazz Ensemble. Under Miss Sampson’s direction, one of her jazz bands has been named Honor Band at the Purdue Jazz Festival 8 years of the last 9 years. Miss Sampson is a frequent adjudicator and clinician in the Chicagoland area.
