Family Membership FAQs

I have students who are homeschooled or attend a non-WSMA member school. How can they participate in a WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival and other programs?
Families of students enrolled at non-WSMA member schools or who are homeschooled are eligible to participate in WSMA programs such as Solo & Ensemble Festivals, State Honors Music Project, Student Composition Project and WSMA Aca U by enrolling as WSMA member schools through the purchase of a Family Membership.

A Family Membership covers all eligible non-WSMA member students belonging to the same nuclear family.

When should I purchase a Family Membership?
Family Memberships are available for purchase starting in the month of August for the following school year.

WSMA recommends purchasing a Family Membership in the fall to ensure there’s time to process the membership and get access to resources, review member only materials and resources and submit registrations prior to program deadlines.

Remember: Purchasing a Family Membership is step 1. Each program and festival has additional registration forms to submit.

How much does it cost?
Current Family Membership enrollment dues and program fees can be found on the Dues & Program Fees webpage or this pdf.

Remember: Family Membership dues are separate from program registration fees.

How do I sign up for a Family Membership?
First time Family Membership purchasers should contact us before enrolling for membership, so that we can ensure that any accounts are configured properly.

If you’ve previously purchased a Family Membership, Account Portal login credentials have already been created for you. Follow the steps on the Become a Member School webpage.

What music should my student play for Solo & Ensemble? Is there a list to choose from?
Once we’ve received payment for your Family Membership enrollment form, you’ll receive access to membership resources, including the Festival Music List in the Account Portal under “My Digital Library.”

In order to receive feedback and rating, students MUST perform a selection from the list.

Remember: Review the Festival Rules, the Event Headers and the selection instructions (found under or near the music title in the Festival Music List) for performance rules specific to each event. Students may be instructed to play specific movements or sections of a music selection, or they may have their choice to play movements. Be sure to share the list with the private music instructor early so they can assist with music selection.

How do I know which Solo & Ensemble Festival my student will perform at?
It’s your choice… most of the time. Festival dates and locations are available for viewing on the Scheduling & Calendar webpage. Select the festival which works best for you and submit this information to WSMA. We will verify that the appropriate adjudicator(s) will be available so your student gets the best possible feedback. If the appropriate adjudicator is not available, we will work out an alternate festival possibility with you.

Your main point of contact for District Solo & Ensemble questions and scheduling will be the assigned Festival Manager. WSMA will provide them with your contact information to ensure you are copied on all District Festival communications.

How and when do I register my student's event(s) for Solo & Ensemble?
All Solo & Ensemble event registrations are completed through the online Festival App which is accessible through the Account Portal. (You’ll receive instructions on setting up your password for the Fest App once your enrollment form is processed. WSMA recommends creating the same password for both the Account Portal and the Festival App.)

The registration deadline for Solo & Ensemble is 4 weeks prior to the Festival date. Late registrations will need the approval of the District Festival Manager and are assessed late fees.

How do I pay for Solo & Ensemble registrations?
Invoices for festival registrations are viewable in the Account Portal. Payment can be made online with a card, or you can print the invoice to mail with a check payment. All registrations should be paid for in full prior to the festival date.
How do I receive Solo & Ensemble Festival results?
Students will receive their written feedback and rating from the Festival Manager. Some festivals distribute the rubric on the day of the festival, if time permits. Others may mail or email the rubric to participants following the festival. You should contact the District Festival Manager directly for the rubric. WSMA receives a final rating, but does not collect a copy of the rubric with the written feedback.
How does State Solo & Ensemble work?
Students that receive a *1 (starred first) on a Class A event are eligible to participate at a State Solo & Ensemble Festival. State registration is completed online through the Festival App; registration fees vary by event, and payment is due prior to the festival date. WSMA will assign your student to a State Festival date and location and provide you with schedule details.

More State Solo & Ensemble FAQs are available here.

Are there medals or awards I can purchase for my student?

“The Joy of Teaching”

Music educators often deem the “joy of teaching” as their number one reason for entering the profession. From sharing meaningful new ways of connecting with students to celebrating overall successes in and outside the classroom, this issue is all about ways of finding joy (again) as a music educator.

Re/sound: Songs of Wisconsin
In a state-wide survey and listening sessions with music educators, we learned about the need for current, authentic, culturally diverse resources, as well as support in teaching with and about music from different cultures. This multimedia collection for general music programs serving grades 4-8 includes video interviews with Wisconsin musicians, performances, audio files, and educator engagement guides designed to help activate the media with learners.
