May 7, 2019 By lfellenz

Join Will Ulrich as he shares how to start a ukulele program in your school: purchasing and maintaining ukeleles, ukulele resources, games, classroom setup, finding performance opportunities, and teaching methods. If you’ve never played ukulele, this workshop is for you.

If you’ve been playing ukulele, this workshop is for you. Learn about chords, strumming patterns, and basic soloing tips. All participants will have access to Will’s entire ukulele music library! This workshop will cover soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles. Baritone ukuleles would have to adapt instruction.

Date & Time: Thursday, July 18, 2019 – 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Location: Wisconsin Center for Music Education

Instructor: Will Ulrich

Will Ulrich received his Bachelors Degree from UW-Milwaukee in 1995. In 2011 he earned his Masters Degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Concordia University-Wisconsin. Will has been teaching general music in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, since 1997 at the elementary, middle and high school levels. He also teaches World Music and ukulele at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee.

November 2, 2018 By lfellenz

Join us to explore the WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards!  We will look at how the standards are organized, compare them to the National Standards & 1997 Wisconsin Music Standards, examine the new areas of Secondary General, Connecting, Technology,  and use with CMP.

How can your work be featured on the WMEA Standards website?

The Ripple Effect: Integrating Empathy Building Skills Through Multicultural Music and Children’s Literature – Feb. 9-10 CANCELLED

February 9, 2017 By lfellenz

This workshop addresses a growing need for building empathy in young students so that they can negotiate the world in a healthy and responsible manner. The workshop also illustrates optimal use of interactive technology like interactive boards, ipads and tablets within an active music making setting. Through movement, singing, playing instruments, body percussion, active listening, and composing activities students work cooperatively, think critically, and refer to collaboration rubrics while developing creative solutions to issues of bullying, gender identity, refugee and immigrant situations, poverty, racial and ethnic similarities and differences, and being labeled and stereotyped.

The empathy building activities are inspired by multicultural music, dance, and diverse children’s books. Children’s literature may be used to build awareness and acceptance of self and others while working toward a common musical objective. Multicultural music and dance are effective conduits into foreign cultures. When handled with respect and integrity, these can be accessed and performed by students outside the native culture with the understanding that the interpretation of the music is framed within parameters of the music teacher’s knowledge of the culture, and its duplication using available materials, instruments, and resources.

Dates: February 9, 2018 – 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm
February 10, 2018 – 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Location: Wisconsin Center for Music Education
