Integrating Social Emotional Learning and Music Education – February 15, 2020

August 15, 2019 By lfellenz

Join us for this hands on workshop integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL), self-efficacy and arts/academic skills through classroom culture, relationship and student-derived data assessment.

Participants will be taken through creating SEL/arts integration routines and curricula and then building tools to assess self-efficacy development in those areas, quantitatively and qualitatively, over time.

Date & Time: February 15, 2020 – 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Location: Wisconsin Center for Music Education

Instructor: Dr. Yorel Lashley

Dr. Yorel Lashley’s desire to study West African traditional music led him to the Kankouran West African Dance Company in Washington, D.C. to learn from Master Drummer Medoune “Dame” Yacine Gueye, and Master Dancer/Artistic Director Assane Konte becoming a senior drummer with the company in 1998. His desire to master Afro-Cuban percussion led to study with Jorge Delgado at the Harbor Conservatory for the performing arts in Spanish Harlem. Yorel performed as a percussionist in New York and abroad and also led his own 10-piece NYC-based band, Melee, serving as a resident band at the Nuyorican Poet’s Café.

He is a founding member of the Handphibians of Madison, WI. In 2000, Yorel founded Drum Power Inc. (www.mydrumpower.com), a youth leadership program that uses learning West African Traditional, Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion to help young people practice life skills—discipline, community and leadership. To date Drum Power has supported more than 3,800 young people from New York City and Madison, Wisconsin. Academically, his research centers on youth empowerment teaching to better understand, develop and support student self-efficacy.

WMEA Standards Workshop – Winter Edition – January 24 and 25, 2020

August 15, 2019 By dmenk

Join us to explore the WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards!
We will explore the WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards, including how they are organized, how they compare to the National Standards & 1997 Wisconsin Music Standards, and how they connect with Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP). In addition, we will examine Wisconsin initiatives, such as the new Secondary General Music strand, enhancements to the Technology strand, and additional standards related to Connecting, one of the Artistic Processes.
But wait….there’s more!
On the second day, participants will have dedicated time to work on plans for incorporating the WMEA Wisconsin Music Standards in their own schools and classrooms. Come as an individual educator, or bring your entire music team. Develop ideas for a single piece of music, plan a project-based unit, or plan for one class or grade level. It’s up to you!

This multimedia collection for general music programs serving grades 4-8 includes video interviews with Wisconsin musicians, performances, audio files, and educator engagement guides designed to help activate the media with learners.
