The WSMA Festival Music List uses a variety of symbols, codes and shorthand to fit a lot of information into a small space. Here is your “one-stop shop” to interpret!
The Header Area
Header – The rules and notes list directly above an event list. These are items that apply specifically to this event, in addition to the general rules laid out in the Festival Rules.
#1 or #2 in the header always states information about the permission and transfer status for the event. These help answer the greater question, ‘How may I find music for this event?’
“Can I submit a permission request to use music that is not on the list?”
- No Permission – There is a full list of selections offered, so you may not submit a piece from off of the list for performance permission.
- Permission Allowed – The event list has some music selections listed, but you are still allowed to submit additional pieces for performance consideration.
- Permission Required – There is no list of music selections. If you would like to enter a registration for this event, you must find music from your library, fellow teacher, music store, etc. and submit it for permission. (Exception: If you transfer music from another list you do not need to submit a permission form.)
Can I transfer music from another event list?
- No Transfer – You must use one of the music selections listed for this event.
- Transfer Allowed – You may use music from another list for this event.
- Limited Transfer – You may only use music from specific other lists for this event. (The events will be notated in the header)

(#) hashtag – The music has been on the list previously, but has had changes made to it this year. Changes may include: combined with another selection, moved from or combined with another event list, instructions updated, and/or the selection number has changed.
(POP) – “Permanently Out of Print” – WSMA has been notified us that this piece of music is no longer available for purchase from this publisher (though some music stores may still have a small stock.)
