Middle Level State Honors

The WSMA Middle Level State Honors Music Project offers musically accomplished youth the opportunity to rehearse and perform with nationally-known conductors in a professional setting. All Honors groups perform at the Wisconsin State Music Conference. Middle Level State Honors students receive their music in August and meet for the first time the day before their fall performance. The rehearsal day and formal concert will take place in the Madison area.

Are you a music teacher at a WSMA member school who is interested in being part of the WSMA State Honors Project? Simply submit an Honors Staff Application to be considered.

Who is Eligible?

Students in grades 6, 7, 8 (at the time of the audition) from WSMA-member schools are eligible to audition for the Middle Level State Honors Music Project. Students must be a regular member of a school music ensemble at the time of auditions and the fall performance. All selected students must be able to attend the October 28 & October 29 rehearsals, activities and events.

Audition Fee & Tuition

Audition Fee: $23 per audition
Tuition for 2022: $240
Includes all meals, lodging, coaching, music, a WSMA State Honors t-shirt, State Honors pin and a downloadable audio recording of the entire concert.

Many schools and music boosters offer tuition assistance locally. A limited number of tuition assistance grants are also available through contributions from the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music (WFSM) and WSMA.

Refund Policy

This project is made possible in part thanks to the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music and the WSMA State Honors Music Project Endowment.

An educational collaboration by WSMA and PBS Wisconsin Education

Re/sound: Songs of Wisconsin
In a state-wide survey and listening sessions with music educators, we learned about the need for current, authentic, culturally diverse resources, as well as support in teaching with and about music from different cultures. This multimedia collection for general music programs serving grades 4-8 includes video interviews with Wisconsin musicians, performances, audio files, and educator engagement guides designed to help activate the media with learners.
